The training center here in Las Vegas has been growing
at a steady pace. We are continuing to train members, both
Journeyman and Apprentices. I know when work is good, members
tend to let training slide by the way side. Safety is a
big issue for us as members. When we get busy on the job,
it’s easy to forget about safety. Everyone seems to have
their mind on the job and if we are not careful, safety can
fall by the wayside and someone can and will be injured.
It’s also important to remember not to let Qualifications
expire. If they expire, then you need to retake the complete
class. In most cases, a refresher is available as long as
your card is not expired.
We have added some Equipment training to some of our existing
training. We purchased a Rough terrain fork lift, and a
Articulated boom lift. With these purchases, this will
allow us to train more readily than we could in the past.
It is our intent to have the safest, skilled, and most
productive work force available to our Contractors, and
we are succeeding!
As Always, J.D. Vincent, Coordinator
We started this Apprentice spot light to show attributes
of some of our Apprentices. The reason I chose Matt Tarver
is because he has stepped up and taken care of himself, as
well as this organization. Back in April, I had a place
donate a bunch of movable walls to our training center,
however they needed to be removed from their building
and installed in our facility. I set up five of my
Instructors to do the demo on a Saturday. I showed up
and there was Matt, with my instructors. He found out
what we were doing, and showed up to help. He donated a
Saturday to get the job done because he knew what it meant
for the center. This is the kind of attitude, ethic
and pride that this organization needs to succeed, and
we have it in Matt.
Matt Tarver was born in Layton UT in 1982 to
Andy and Wanda Tarver. His Father was a Truck Driver,
and worked for the Military. Matt’s father taught him
to stand up for what you believe in, work hard and
to have a kind heart. His Mother spent some time in
the military and the rest of the time as a house wife.
Matt had some challenges while he was growing up.
He learned about right and wrong the hard way, like
many of us do. He turned his life around after his
father convinced him to do right by his family, and
himself. He moved to LV in May of 2004 and shortly
after, one of his friends got him started in the
Carpenters Union. He joined Local #1977. He is
currently a 90% Apprentice and has 3 classes till
he Journeys out. I’m sure that with his Attitude,
he will no doubt succeed in the Trade. I asked Matt
to give me a couple paragraphs about himself so I
could put this together.
Matt said and I quote "I am proud to be in a union
because it changed my life in ways you can't even
imagine. All my old friends I used to hang with are
in jail or prison, and here I am. I got away from
all that stuff and now I have a career. I’m proud
to be a Carpenter, and I make good money. I have
brothers in the trade who have my back. I love to
help my brothers out when they need me, and I
always try to be there for them. It’s tough living
in Las Vegas all by yourself, and Union brothers
help out with that. I have even been invited to
spend Christmas with some of my union brothers.
We are a family, a very big one."
